After the packet left the copier

These notes name a specific commission and a constraint in the year. They are not marketplace stars or app-store widgets.

The kitchen count finally sat on a separate figure from the coat room. I had been merging them for three mailings because it looked larger. Two major donors asked why the kitchen number looked smaller; both stayed after they saw the Tuesday log cited under the chart.

Our March packet used to open with a slide of colored rings nobody could read once it was photocopied. The new pages put last autumn’s attendance in labeled bars. I still wish the second-quarter dip had a fuller footnote — the bus-route note felt thin — but the room finally argued about the route instead of the legend.

They refused to put a harvest weight on the cover because we had only weighed two Saturday markets. The brief used bed counts and volunteer hours instead. Our city greening officer said that was the first packet she did not have to fact-check against our own sign-in sheets.

The close-out table marked the furnace as partial with the November invoice date. I had wanted it listed as done because the unit was ordered. The program officer wrote back about the porch, not the furnace. That was a quieter winter than I expected.

Food network, kitchen versus coat room

A county food network had printed a single “households served” figure that mixed tray counts with coat-room visits. The annual report commission split the figures, cited the Tuesday log, and kept the coat-room photograph in a caption that named the drive date. Two donors asked about the smaller kitchen number and remained after they saw the source line. The work did not increase gifts on its own; it stopped a definition from traveling unexamined.

After-school board, photocopied rings

A neighborhood after-school program replaced a color-ring slide with labeled bars in the March packet. Directors argued about a bus-route cut. The chair still wanted a fuller footnote on the second-quarter dip. That reservation stayed in the story because the packet is a working document, not a trophy.
